Copan Ruinas 3 days

Three days dedicated to birding West part of Honduras incluiding the Mayan City Copan Ruinas and more. We will also visit El Malcote Nature Reserve, La Laguna, Las Sepulturas National Park and other locales with a variety of habitats, including dry rainforest.

Notes:
The above birding itineraries are based on what are essentially popular routes for birders. It can be shortened or extended.
All trips are available year round, but prices may be adjusted around special holidays.

Tour can be extended:
Lake Yojoa for 3 or 4 days.
The Birding by Boat Tour: a day tour to cover fresh water river-lake, swamps and savanna birds.

Fitness – Easy to moderate hiking is require. For birders with moderate limitations we are able to make a special itinerary. Either way, birders will have a fantastic opportunity to views an impressive number of bird species, and the experience will be an enjoyable one.

Clothing – Dress for hot and humid tropical weather and be prepare for rain. Light clothing is recommended: cotton shirts and t-shirts (earth colors preferable), long and short pants, poncho, hiking shoes, an extra pair or sandals, hat, insect repellent and sun block.

Gear – Binoculars, scope, field guide, notebook and camera.

Itinerary (3 days/2 nights):

Our first birding day will start at 6:15 am at the EL MALCOTE NATURE RESERVE (400 acres of second growth forest with big patches of humid forest areas) in search of the Slate Colored Solitaire, Green Jay, Plain Antvireo, Keel Billed Toucan and many others; after lunch birding will continue until around 3:00pm when we will drive to Copan Town. We’ll stop to birds along the road at places surrounded by pine Oak Forest and Coffee Plantations, in search of Bushy Crested Jay, Salvins Emerald, Red Throated parakeet, Prevost Ground sparrow and many others., After dinner we will go for a short night birding walk in search of owls, nighthawks and paraques.

We start start birding at LA LAGUNA ROAD and surrounding areas early looking for species that favor dry condition like Streak Backed Oriole, Rusty Sparrow, Lesser Ground Cuckoo, Plain Wren, White Throated Magpie Jay, Elegant Trogon and many other species that can be found here. At 8:30am a well deserved breakfast with binoculars at hand to catch any beauty from this tropics and then we drive up into the hills looking for Elegant Euphonia, Emerald Toucan, Collared Trogon, Yellow Throated Brush Finch, Golden Olive Woodpecker and maybe the very rare White breasted Hawk.

After lunch (2:00pm) we drive to Copan so we can focus in lowland species such as Turquoise Browed Motmot, Crested Bobwhite, Cinnamon Hummingbird, Rufous Browed Pepershrike, Orange billed Nightingale Thrush and many Others.

Early birding on El Mirador Road (secondary forest with some scrubbier areas, with the copan River crossing the area and big open fields all over). We will hear and look for water birds in this area, there is a huge fish farm in this place so its Home for many species which are all year around one of the few places where I can see American coots in Copan, other species such as Northern Jacana, Blue winged Teal, Sungrebe, Amazon Kingfisher, Snail Kite, Herons and many others….

We will be back in Copan before Lunch after this you can visit the magnificent archaeological Mayan Site and spend three or more hours in it, there are many Scarlet Macaws which have been introduced in this place and they are flying wild into the big Park.
